SPORTS IN 2010: ANYTHING BUT TRIVIAL

Paris: In the greater plan of things, sports shouldn't really matter. Not like scarcity, combat, natural disasters or the massive amount of other agonies people suffer every day around the world.
In the equal vein, no sportsperson, no matter how lionize, will or should yet be as important as a caring parent, an aid employee, a maternity take care of.
a firefighter or the innumerable others who sustain life amid the chaos of life itself. No sportsperson can claim that their sporting achievements do that, no substance how much they're paid.
And yet, in 2010, one of the few times I weep was at a sports event. Watching Canadian skater Joannie Rochette glide on Olympic ice time after the death of her mother was a truly humbling and uplifting lesson in courage.
