SANIYA UPSTAGES ARTI SINGH

Saniya Shaikh won the women's skeet gold award, beating Arti Singh by five shot, in the Sahara 54th National shooting finals at the Dr. Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, on Sunday.
The 18-year-old Saniya, who had won her maiden National women's heading two years ago in Jaipur in the deficiency of Arti, said the latest attempt would give her a lot of confidence.
Saniya, National junior champion for six times in a queue, shot round of 23, 21 and 22 (total 66), one short of her greatest score. With only four shooters in the dispute, there was no finishing.

SOMDEV GETS A TOUGH FIRST ROUND AT AUSTRALIAN OPEN

India’s wild card contestant Somdev Devvarman was today handed a tough draw at the Australian Open as he is pitted against world number 51 Tommy Robredo in the first round of the men’s singles event here.
Somdev, ranked 110 in the world, was award one of the two wild cards for Asian players by the organisers of the first Grand Slam of the period.
Somdev had never managed to get into the most important draw as he failed in his previous two attempts in the qualifiers.

SHARAPOVA STARTS OFF IN STYLE

Maria Sharapova had her first be successful at Melbourne Park since claiming the 2008 Australian Open title, beating Thai veteran Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-3 on Monday in the opening match on middle court.
The previous No. 1—ranked Sharapova, who missed the 2009 Australian Open with a shoulder wound and was ousted in the first-round last year by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko, struggle with her serve and was inconsistent in the second set. 
After losing the opening examination game at love, Sharapova won seven directly games to take a 1—0 lead in the second set.
The 33—year—old Tamarine, clearly not in peak material condition, rallied and had a game point on serve for a 4—1 lead but Sharapova broke back and regain momentum, winning the final five games.

Jasmin Ouschan sweep through the 48-player field at the inaugural WPBA Masters tournament held January 6-9 to defeat the tour’s number-three-ranked player, Karen Corr, in the championship in a close 7-6 victory. The event was hosted by the Soaring Eagle Casino and option in Mount Pleasant, MI.
Corr went undefeated into Sunday’s matches after having dispatch the tour’s former number one, Ga Young Kim, in a delicate hill-hill contest the evening before. In her semi-final match against Monica Webb, the score seesaw to 2-all in the short race to 7.
